Students to get food rations

Students to get food rations during exams. More than 60,000 poor school-going children in nine counties that have been hit hard by drought will benefit from food donations as they sit their KCPE and KCSE exams.

Cereal Millers Association (CMA) in partnership with Kenya Red Cross has mobilized its members who are mostly flour millers to donate food.

With the help of the Kenya Red Cross Society, the miller’s association will deliver directly to schools in some of the affected counties or to Kenya Red Cross distribution centers.

CMA’s chairman Kamaldeep Phull said they have devoted themselves to supporting school-going children in various counties by providing food during the examination period between November to December.

“We are experiencing the worst drought in over 40 years which has resulted in extreme hunger and starvation. This program aims to feed school students and provide much-needed nutrition as they sit for their examinations, a very critical point in their education journey,” said Phull.

Phull was speaking on Saturday during the flagging off of the food donation from CMA members at Kenya Red Cross Society offices in South C, Nairobi.

The donation, which will benefit 61,000 school-going children in 150 schools will go to Meru, Garissa, Marsabit, Tana River, Samburu, Makueni, Kajiado, Nyeri, Machakos, and Nyeri counties.

Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Asha Mohammed praised the millers for their donation, promising them that they will use their humanitarian work experience and enormous network to ensure the food donation reaches the intended counties and beneficiaries.
